THE WAREHOUSE

OVERVIEW

The Warehouse started as a challenge for Milestone. The homesite initially had a few different clients and designs. A very modern home design went fully through the process only to be rejected by the city due to its positioning on the lot. Back to square one. Instead of playing it safe, we wanted to try something a little different. We love architecture that stands the test of time. Building a home that can’t be pegged by the year it was built. The homesite is on the cusp of Lawrenceville’s residential area as it transitioned into the more commercial area of the Strip District where older warehouse and manufacturing buildings were being converted into modern living spaces. It seemed like the perfect fit to create a home that mimicked a warehouse conversion project. We started with 11’ and 12’ ceilings to give it that loft feel. We went with a classic red brick with detailing that would have been common for an older warehouse building. The most important part was the windows. Large oversized warehouse style windows define the look. However, our favorite detail is the faux bricked-in windows. On the facade we purposely cut the brick so it looked like we had removed a window and bricked it in similar to what you’d see on an old warehouse building. This small detail confused a lot of people. We still meet people that don’t believe the home was entirely new construction! With views of the city skyline and being positioned in such a dense urban area we put the kitchen and living space on the 2nd floor with guest rooms and office on the 1st and the Owner’s suite on the 3rd. The living space on the 2nd floor looking out to the Pittsburgh skyline further drove home the loft feel.

When Ryan and Natalie came to us it was still fairly early into construction but they knew right away this was the home for them. They had been currently living in the Strip District and loved the concept of the home. Our initial concept for the interiors stayed intact but we were able to work with Natalie and Ryan to make this home their own.
